JOE.A.ROSS SCHOOL

was named after Joseph Albert Ross. The school has carried his name since he passed away.

He was married to Cecelia. Together they had three children whose names are Glen, Mike, and Lana. Glen Ross is currently Chief Glen Ross of Opaskwayak Cree Nation

Joe and Cecelia Ross adopted four children when their own children were all grown up.

Prior to plans for the school being a reality, he met with several band members, as well as the Band Administration and Council at that time. They all felt that we needed this school for children so they could and math, science, social studies. They believed the students would learn more, get their diplomas, and go to college or university. These then could become the leaders and educators of the children yet to come.

He saw it as a place where children could receive a quality education while still maintaining a strong respect for their own culture and language.

He knew, at that time, many students were dropping out of school. He didn’t want to see that continue.

He was a man with a vision of the future. He saw that education could improve for the people of OCN, and he moved ahead, overcoming many obstacles, to make the school a reality.A School that was built on OCN, under OCN site management. He was a very intelligent man, and an excellent administrator who was a role model for many people of Opaskwayak Cree Nation.
